Have you messed around with buying an expired domain to get backlinks? I saw that a competitor was doing that and I am starting to search now. So far I've only found low domain rating sites. My plan is to buy them and then set up a 301 from the expired site to mine.

Are there any consequences to this strategy?

Yes. It works. It'd be better to buy a very poorly or un-monetized site though. Sifting through the mountain of expired domains is a ton of work but there's gold there if you're willing to put in the work.

I've not personally seen anybody get penalized for it. I've seen Google ignore (seemed like it) the previous backlinks. The likely worst case scenario is you buy a site with a penalty and you just wasted a bunch of money. (You won't know it has a penalty until you buy it and log into search console)

Thanks. To clarify, I am buying an expired domain and just 301 redirecting it to my current domain. I thought that would get the backlinks to my current domain and improve my rating

Yes but Google may or may not ignore those links when you do that if the site has been expired for a length of time.

Thanks. I redid my site the other week to double down on what is working.

Redid hosting to improve core web vitals, writing more articles similar to articles that already drive traffic for me, and removed a bunch of indexed pages that were no long relevant.

Coming up on three years of owning my domain but feels like I'm starting to figure stuff out. My topical clustering needs to be reworked next. My discovery traffic has gone through the roof, hoping that this is the start of good things to come. Thank you again for all the content you put out

Started my ecom site spring 2022, didnt get going until fall. Indexing takes a while, and sometimes google will "forget" to index. Ive had posts from months ago that i had to go back to re-index even though i put it in the que in GSC.

If that's the case, you need to focus on authority. You should be putting out more/better/targeted content and building links.

Ive been putting out a lot of new posts for the last 2 months, and those articles are all indexed! But some of the earlier ones were not, I wonder if Google dropped the early posts because i just wasnt that active at the time.

Using Authority Builders to help create backlinks, expensive but quality stuff. I notice when i look at sites with like 50k+ backlinks, most are no follow or sketch sites. Does those low quality links matter?

Also, does buying press releases work for authority anymore? I keep reading conflicting opinions.
